Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 20, Seymour Whyte, a subsidiary of VINCI Construction based in Australia, has been awarded a contract to upgrade the Eastern Freeway in Melbourne, Victoria, focusing on the Hoddle to Burke section. The project, part of a design-and-build alliance, involves Seymour Whyte, John Holland, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald, and Major Road Projects Victoria. Valued at approximately €450 million ($524 million), the contract is split evenly between Seymour Whyte and John Holland, with completion expected by mid-2028.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-2028.
The upgrade will expand the freeway by adding one lane in each direction and constructing a dedicated busway to enhance public transport efficiency. The project also includes shared-use paths for pedestrians and cyclists, multiple civil structures, and noise barriers to improve community livability. “This project will deliver significant improvements to Melbourne’s transport infrastructure,” a Seymour Whyte representative stated.
The Eastern Freeway upgrade aligns with Seymour Whyte’s recent portfolio expansion. Last month, the company secured three contracts worth €431 million across Queensland and New South Wales. These include constructing a 4.4km section of the Coomera Connector Stage 1 South on the Gold Coast, upgrading the M5 Motorway Westbound in Sydney, and building a 1.1km road with a 212-meter flood-resistant bridge over the North Pine River in Moreton Bay.
In 2024, Seymour Whyte also won two contracts totaling A$340 million for the 3.8km Mamre Road upgrade in Sydney and the Clyde Road enhancement in Melbourne, both for Major Road Projects Victoria. The Clyde Road project is slated for completion in 2027, while the Mamre Road project is expected to finish in 2028. “Our team is committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure that supports growing communities,” said a Seymour Whyte spokesperson.
These projects demonstrate Seymour Whyte’s expertise in delivering complex infrastructure solutions across Australia. The Eastern Freeway upgrade will enhance connectivity, improve transport options, and support economic growth in Melbourne by providing modern, efficient road infrastructure. The alliance’s collaborative approach ensures the project meets community needs while adhering to high standards of sustainability and functionality.
