Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 21, Skanska, a global construction company, has secured a contract worth approximately SEK 2.5 billion ($249 million) from New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority to enhance the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. The project, recorded in Skanska’s U.S. order bookings for the third quarter of 2025, focuses on installing a main cable dehumidification system and related infrastructure. The contract was awarded in July 2025, with completion expected by September 2029.
The contract was signed with the region’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The initiative involves designing and implementing a dehumidification system for the bridge’s four main cables, alongside an acoustic monitoring system. It also includes electrical and communication systems, with maintenance and monitoring services for five years post-commissioning. Additional tasks encompass internal inspections of the main cable panels, replacing cable band bolts, aerial obstruction lights, their supports, messenger cables, hand ropes, and stanchions.
The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, a vital link between Brooklyn and Staten Island, supports the interstate highway network. Its towers, standing 693 feet tall and weighing 27,000 tons each, are secured by three million rivets and one million bolts, underscoring the structure’s scale and complexity.
A Skanska representative stated: “This project leverages our expertise in complex infrastructure to enhance the longevity and safety of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, a critical transportation asset.” The dehumidification system will protect the cables from corrosion, ensuring the bridge’s durability while maintaining its operational efficiency.
Beyond this project, Skanska has recently secured a $91 million contract for the Pacific Middle School Replacement Project in Des Moines, Washington. Additionally, in July 2025, the UK’s National Highways awarded Skanska a £153 million contract to upgrade the A47 Thickthorn junction near Norwich, England, which includes constructing a 1.6-kilometer free-flow link road and two underpasses.
The Verrazzano-Narrows project highlights Skanska’s role in advancing infrastructure resilience. By integrating advanced technology and long-term maintenance, the company supports New York’s transportation network, ensuring reliable connectivity for millions. The initiative aligns with Skanska’s broader commitment to sustainable and innovative construction solutions, contributing to safer and more efficient infrastructure globally.
