Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 25, Malta has officially launched the Malta Semiconductor Competence Centre (MSCC), marking a significant step towards enhancing the country's position in Europe's semiconductor industry. The MSCC is a strategic initiative led by Malta Enterprise on behalf of the Ministry for Economy, Enterprise, and Strategic Projects, in collaboration with the University of Malta, MCAST, the Malta Digital Innovation Authority, and Silicon Catalyst EU Ltd.

The Centre aims to foster innovation, develop critical skills, and create new opportunities for start-ups by bridging academia, research, and industry. This initiative strengthens the ecosystem needed to support the growing demand for semiconductors across Europe.

Silvio Schembri, Minister for Economy, Enterprise, and Strategic Projects, emphasized the significance of the MSCC: “Placing Malta at the heart of Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem. It is not just a centre for technology, but a bridge connecting the talent, ideas, and ambition of our innovators with the wider European network. Through this collaboration, we are building competitiveness, attracting new opportunities, and ensuring that Maltese workers and businesses can continue to succeed in the digital age.”

A primary goal of the MSCC is preparing the workforce for the fast-evolving semiconductor industry. The Centre plans to offer targeted training programs, micro-credential courses, and research initiatives to equip professionals and future talent with the skills needed for this dynamic sector.

The ChipStartEU programme, launched in partnership with Silicon Catalyst EU, is another key initiative. This programme supports semiconductor start-ups, particularly in chip design. Over 40 companies have already applied, with 12 selected for the first cohort, who will gain access to Silicon Catalyst’s global network to accelerate the commercialization of their ideas.

The MSCC is also aligned with European semiconductor strategies, including the European Chips Act and IPCEI projects, positioning Malta as an important player in these efforts. Through collaborations with organizations like IMEC, ARM, and the European Network of Competence Centres, Malta is attracting international start-ups and scale-ups, further enhancing local research, development, and innovation.

In addition to its research and development goals, the MSCC will host key events such as the Global Semiconductor Conference in November and the European Forum for Electronic Components and Systems 2025, solidifying Malta's role in Europe's semiconductor ecosystem.

The Centre’s launch aligns with Malta Vision2050, which prioritizes sustainable growth, technological advancement, and a resilient economy driven by skilled human capital.

George Gregory, CEO of Malta Enterprise, concluded: “The Malta Semiconductor Competence Centre is a bold step forward for our nation. It is a catalyst for innovation, a platform for nurturing talent, and a gateway for international collaboration. By bringing together research, industry, and entrepreneurship, we are ensuring Malta plays a meaningful role in Europe's semiconductor future."

This launch represents a crucial investment in both infrastructure and human capital, laying the foundation for Malta's continued growth in the global semiconductor landscape.
