Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 9, OPAL Fuels Inc. and South Jersey Industries (SJI) have commenced production at a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. The plant, located at the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) solid waste landfill, is expected to generate more than 650,000 million British thermal units (MMBtu) or approximately 4.6 million gasoline gallon equivalents (GGE) of biomethane annually.
The facility in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, is expected to produce over 650,000 million British thermal units or more than 4.6 million gasoline gallon equivalent per year of RNG.
“Located at ACUA’s solid waste landfill, the RNG facility captures and processes landfill gas into RNG, providing a renewable, lower-carbon fuel alternative to diesel and conventional natural gas,” OPAL, SJI, and ACUA said in a joint statement. This project marks the first completed under OPAL and SJI’s joint venture and introduces RNG into the pipeline network of South Jersey Gas, a subsidiary of SJI.
ACUA president Matthew DeNafo stated: “The project makes ACUA the first public solid waste facility in New Jersey to host an RNG project.” The partnership between OPAL and SJI highlights the growing role of renewable energy initiatives in transforming landfill emissions into sustainable fuel sources.
A second OPAL-SJI RNG plant is under construction at the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex in Florence Township, New Jersey. Scheduled to start operations next year, it will have a production capacity of up to 0.92 million MMBtu, or about 6.5 million GGE annually. RNG from this facility will be distributed through OPAL’s fueling station network to supply heavy-duty trucks. According to the companies, the project is expected to avoid around 530,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
The two companies established their 50-50 joint venture on September 21, 2023, to develop and operate RNG facilities across the region. Beyond the joint projects with SJI, OPAL is advancing two fully owned facilities: Cottonwood and Kirby. Each plant will have a production capacity of 0.66 million MMBtu per year, with Cottonwood expected to begin operations in 2026 and Kirby in 2027.
In the first half of 2025, OPAL’s RNG output rose 35 percent year-on-year to 2.3 million MMBtu. Quarterly production grew 33 percent from the same period in 2024, reaching 1.2 million MMBtu. The company’s Fuel Station Services segment also reported increased sales, dispensing and servicing 40.8 million GGEs of transportation fuel in the three months ended June 30, 2025, and 81.4 million GGEs for the first six months—an 11 percent and 14 percent rise, respectively.
“Of this amount, RNG dispensed as a transportation fuel was 20.6 and 40.1 million GGEs, an increase of 10 percent and 14 percent respectively, compared to the prior-year period,” OPAL said in its August 7 report. By the end of the second quarter, the company had 46 fueling stations under construction, including 20 owned directly by OPAL.
