Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 10, The Victorian state government in Australia has announced the completion of construction on Town Hall Station, the first new train station built in Melbourne’s central business district (CBD) in more than 40 years. The project marks a major milestone in the city’s Metro Tunnel initiative, which aims to expand capacity and improve connectivity across the metropolitan rail network.
Town Hall Station will serve as a key access point to the city centre.
Located beneath Swanston Street, between Collins and Flinders streets, Town Hall Station will serve as a key access point to the city centre. It is one of five new stations developed as part of the Metro Tunnel project. The station features three main entrances — at the rebuilt City Square, Federation Square, and within Swanston Street’s new Town Hall Place development. A pedestrian underpass will also link the station with Flinders Street Station through Campbell Arcade and the Degraves Street subway, allowing passengers to move seamlessly between Metro Tunnel and City Loop services without needing to tap off their travel cards.
Town Hall Station’s design showcases a spacious concourse beneath City Square supported by branching columns and 18-metre-wide platforms, which are among the widest underground metro platforms in the world. The structure employs a trinocular design, consisting of three overlapping tunnels at platform level and an arched ceiling to enhance space and visibility.
Construction began in 2017 and involved complex engineering work due to the station’s depth and location beneath one of Melbourne’s busiest areas. Excavation reached depths comparable to a five-storey building. More than 7,000 cubic metres of concrete and over 2,200 tonnes of steel were used in the construction of internal structures. The intricate work required to build two CBD stations — Town Hall and State Library — meant these sites were completed after other Metro Tunnel stations at Arden, Parkville, and Anzac.
The completion of Town Hall Station represents significant progress toward the Metro Tunnel’s scheduled opening in early December this year. Once operational, the tunnel will create a direct route between the city’s northwest and southeast, reducing congestion and travel times for commuters.
Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan said: “This is the first new station in Melbourne’s CBD in 40 years. We invested in public transport – and just look at the results. The Metro Tunnel will cut congestion and get you to work, uni[versity] and home sooner – and it opens this year.”
The new station is expected to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of Melbourne’s transport system, providing a modern gateway to the central business district. With its completion, Victoria moves closer to delivering one of its most significant infrastructure upgrades, positioning Melbourne’s public transport network to better accommodate future urban growth and passenger demand.
