Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 23, As of Wednesday, more than 93.34 million inbound and outbound passenger trips had been recorded through the Zhuhai Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), seven years after the bridge officially opened to traffic. The 55-kilometer bridge, which connects the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Macao Special Administrative Region, and the city of Zhuhai in south China, began operations on October 23, 2018, and remains the world’s longest bridge-and-tunnel sea crossing.
According to the bridge’s border inspection station, traffic through Zhuhai Port has seen steady growth since its opening. In 2019, the station processed 12.88 million passenger trips and 860,000 vehicle trips. By 2024, those numbers had increased significantly to 27 million passenger trips and 5.55 million vehicle trips. So far in 2025, Zhuhai Port has already recorded 25.1 million passenger trips and 5.46 million vehicle trips, reflecting year-on-year increases of 17 percent and 25 percent, respectively.
“With the continuing growth trend of passenger and vehicle flows at the port, it is expected that in 2025 total passenger trips through the port will exceed 30 million and total vehicle flow will be over 6 million,” said Chen Faqiu, head of the inspection station.
The bridge has played a vital role in facilitating travel, trade, and regional integration among Hong Kong, Macao, and the mainland. The expansion of individual travel from the mainland to Hong Kong and Macao has significantly stimulated cross-border tourism and mobility. Data from the inspection station showed that since the beginning of this year, more than 10.15 million visitors from the mainland have traveled across the bridge—a record high—including 4.6 million tourists holding travel visas.
The HZMB has also substantially improved regional transportation efficiency. The bridge has reduced the driving time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai and Macao from about three hours to roughly 45 minutes, providing a faster and more convenient route for passengers and logistics operators.
In 2023, the Zhuhai Port handled a daily average vehicle flow of about 9,000, which has now increased to over 18,000 vehicles per day, nearly doubling within two years. The continued rise in cross-border movement reflects the bridge’s growing importance as a major transport corridor for both people and goods.
Officials noted that the HZMB’s connectivity advantages are expected to further strengthen integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, contributing to deeper regional cooperation and higher economic efficiency. As passenger and vehicle flows continue to grow, the Zhuhai Port is enhancing its capacity and service systems to support the bridge’s role as a crucial hub for cross-border exchange and development in southern China.
