Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 14, Ericsson is expanding its presence in India with a new Radio Access Network (RAN) Software R&D unit in Bengaluru. The center will focus on developing 5G and 5G Advanced features for Ericsson’s 5G baseband, working closely with the company’s global RAN software teams. The move reflects both India’s skilled workforce and Ericsson’s commitment to the local and global telecom markets.

Bengaluru, recognized as one of India’s fastest-growing technology hubs, offers a strong talent pool in software engineering and hosts several global telecom companies. Its dynamic ecosystem makes it an ideal location for R&D operations.

This new initiative complements Ericsson’s ongoing R&D efforts in India. In June 2025, the company expanded its ASIC development in the country to support the local semiconductor ecosystem. Ericsson is also collaborating with Volvo and Airtel to integrate XR and Digital Twin technologies at Volvo’s Bengaluru R&D Center. Partnerships with IIT Madras are advancing AI research for 6G networks with a focus on Responsible AI, while collaborations with the Indian Statistical Institute and IIT Kharagpur target cyber-physical systems, AI-driven networks, secure communications, and edge computing.

Ericsson has been a key player in India’s telecom sector for over 120 years. The company pioneered GSM services in 1994, contributed to the evolution to 5G, and launched the India 6G program in 2024 with a dedicated research team at its Chennai R&D Center. Globally, Ericsson invests about USD 5 billion annually in R&D, reinforcing its leadership in 5G and next-generation technologies. Its Indian R&D sites in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Gurugram cover Transport, Packet Core, OSS, BSS, Cloud, and advanced AI technologies.

Nitin Bansal, Managing Director of Ericsson India and Head of Network Solutions for South East Asia, Oceania, and India, said: “Setting up the R&D Center in India for RAN software development represents a significant step forward towards strengthening our R&D operations in India. Even as we leverage Indian software talent, we are also contributing to building the knowledge base and the telecom eco-system in the country.”

David Bjore, Head of RAN Software & Compute Platforms at Ericsson, added: “This latest Ericsson R&D investment and commitment shows how important India is to our work on next-generation technology. We’re building on the strong partnerships we’ve formed in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Gurugram, and for the first time, we’re developing this RAN software ourselves in India. This is a significant step, as it not only supports India’s rising tech scene but also enables us to create solutions in the country that can have a global impact.”

Overall, the Bengaluru R&D unit strengthens Ericsson’s innovation ecosystem in India, advancing 5G and 6G technologies, AI-driven networks, and industrial-scale solutions, while supporting local talent and reinforcing India’s role as a key hub for global telecom research.
