Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 14, Northwestern University and the Turner-Walsh joint venture celebrated the topping out of the new Ryan Field stadium in Illinois, US, marking the completion of the structure’s steel phase. The privately funded $850-million redevelopment is on track to open in 2026.

The topping out was marked with the placement of the final steel beam.

Northwestern University athletic director Mark Jackson said: “There’s never been anything like this in the history of college athletics, and it separates itself on so many different fronts.” The stadium is expected to generate significant economic benefits and jobs for Evanston and surrounding communities.

The design incorporates accessibility and sustainability features, targeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. Planned green spaces and public plazas are intended for community use. During the ground-breaking ceremony in July, Northwestern reported the redevelopment would create more than 2,900 jobs and deliver over $659 million in economic impact to Evanston.

The project includes $208 million in contracts awarded to local, women-owned, or minority-owned companies. Additional financial outcomes include over $12 million in fees to Evanston, $11 million for city-issued permits, and approximately $1.5 million in indirect tax revenue.

Ryan Sports Development CEO Pat Ryan Jnr said: “It’ll be the most intimate stadium in America. That’s because of the incredible engineering that went into it, but also the incredible craftsmanship.” Turner Construction Company and Walsh Construction Company share general contracting responsibilities for the project.

Turner Construction vice-president and general manager Kate Van Zeyl said: “We’re proud to celebrate this achievement alongside Northwestern, Walsh, the Ryan family, and the City of Evanston. This milestone reflects not just the progress of a stadium, but the strength of a community working together to create opportunity, sustainability, and lasting impact.”
