Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 19, Danone Canada announced plans to expand its flagship Boucherville plant in Quebec to increase yoghurt production capacity and meet rising consumer demand. The company said this is its largest investment in the country to date and will also be used to modernize energy use at the facility.

The expansion is expected to boost yoghurt tub production by 40% and increase the plant’s capacity to receive and process Canadian raw milk by 20%. Danone Canada noted that the Boucherville site currently produces more than one-third of the country’s dairy yoghurts, and the upgrade will help strengthen its leadership position in the market.

Construction at the Boucherville site has already begun, with the new production line scheduled to be operational in 2026.

Frederic Guichard, president of Danone Canada, stated: “Canadians are embracing healthier choices, and the rising popularity of yogurt, especially high‑protein varieties, speaks volumes. Nutritious and accessible, yogurt has become a staple for families. This significant investment underscores our commitment to supporting local production and delivering on what we do best at Danone: bringing health through food.”

The expansion also emphasizes sustainability. Danone Canada will invest in new energy‑recovery equipment under ÉcoPerformance, a Government of Québec programme linked to the Plan for a Green Economy 2030. Since 2022, the Boucherville facility has been among Danone’s first plants in North America to divert at least 99% of non-hazardous waste from landfill and ensure no hazardous waste is sent to landfill.

Géraldine Moret, vice-president of operations at Danone Canada, added: “Through growth, innovation and sustainability of our operations, we are proud to reaffirm our position as a major food producer in Canada and to lead by example when it comes to improving the sustainability of our products and operations.”

The company’s portfolio at Boucherville includes well-known brands such as Oikos, Activia, and Danone. The latest expansion follows a $9 million investment announced in June 2025 to launch production of more sustainable individual yoghurt cups made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin.

The investment will not only increase production volumes but also reinforce the plant’s role in supporting local dairy supply chains and advancing environmentally responsible manufacturing practices. Danone emphasized that the upgrades align with its broader commitment to combining growth, innovation, and sustainability while maintaining high-quality products for Canadian consumers.

Overall, the Boucherville expansion is positioned as a strategic step to meet growing consumer demand for nutritious yoghurts, strengthen the company’s market presence, and continue leading sustainable food production in Canada.
