Wedoany.com Report-Dec.18, The Lamadian natural gas storage facility in Daqing Oilfield, located in Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China, has marked 50 years of continuous operation as the country's longest-serving underground natural gas storage site.
Over this period, the facility has handled injection and extraction totaling more than 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. It has remained operational for over 18,000 days, exceeding the typical expected lifespan of 30 to 50 years for such installations.
Throughout its history, the storage has maintained an outstanding record with no safety incidents or environmental concerns reported since its inception.
Recently, the facility initiated a new extraction phase, aiming to release 84 million cubic meters of natural gas to contribute to winter energy needs in Heilongjiang, a region experiencing particularly cold winters.
Daqing Oilfield constructed China's first underground natural gas storage in 1975 to manage substantial volumes of gas byproducts effectively. The Lamadian site has since played a vital role in ensuring stable supply and supporting regional energy requirements.
This long-term performance demonstrates reliable engineering and operational practices in maintaining underground storage integrity over decades. The facility's capacity to store and retrieve large quantities of natural gas supports consistent availability during peak demand periods.
Ongoing activities reflect continued emphasis on secure energy infrastructure to meet seasonal consumption patterns. The extraction supports heating and power generation needs in the province, contributing to overall supply stability.
The milestone highlights advancements in domestic natural gas management since the mid-1970s. By converting byproduct storage challenges into a strategic asset, the project has provided enduring benefits for resource utilization.
Daqing Oilfield's experience with the Lamadian facility serves as a foundation for subsequent developments in underground storage across the country. Its sustained operation without interruptions underscores effective maintenance and monitoring protocols.
As winter demand rises, the current withdrawal phase ensures timely delivery of stored reserves. This capability remains essential for balancing production, imports, and consumption in the regional energy mix.
The 50-year achievement represents a significant contribution to national energy security through proven, long-lasting infrastructure dedicated to natural gas storage and distribution.
