Wedoany.com Report-Dec.26, Mersin International Port (MIP), Türkiye's largest container port on the Mediterranean, has introduced the country's first fully integrated yard automation system. This advancement forms part of the ongoing East Med Hub 2 (EMH2) development, with the first phase now operational.
MIP operates as a joint venture between PSA International, IFM Investors, and Akfen Holding. The automation system equips the EMH2 expansion with four ship-to-shore (STS) quay cranes and 14 fully automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (aRMGs). These electric aRMGs integrate seamlessly with the terminal operating system, functioning autonomously while allowing remote control when needed. This setup improves handling accuracy, reduces truck waiting times, and boosts yard productivity, while enhancing safety through high-precision scanners, cameras, and sensor-based systems.
The new STS cranes measure 97 metres in height, with a 71-metre outreach, 30-metre rail span, and 65-tonne lifting capacity. They enable simultaneous servicing of two mega vessels. The extended quay reaches 880 metres, supporting larger ships and improving overall operational flexibility.
Through the EMH2 project, MIP is increasing its annual container handling capacity from 2.6 million TEUs to 3.6 million TEUs. This upgrade addresses growing regional demand, enhances efficiency, and supports trade flows for importers and exporters in the area.
In October 2025, MIP welcomed the 400-metre mega vessel MSC DITTE from Mediterranean Shipping Company at the newly completed EMH2 Terminal, demonstrating the facility's readiness for next-generation container ships.
Ajay Kumar Singh, General Manager of MIP, said: "This investment sets a new benchmark for Türkiye's logistics sector. The introduction of fully integrated yard automation reflects our commitment to operational excellence, enabling us to deliver world-class efficiency while advancing our sustainability objectives. With this development, we are taking a decisive step towards becoming a leading logistics hub in the Eastern Mediterranean."
The automation contributes to safer working conditions by allowing operators to work remotely from the quay area. It also aligns with MIP's goals for sustainable operations through electric-powered equipment. The project strengthens MIP's position as a key gateway in the Eastern Mediterranean, facilitating efficient container handling and contributing to regional trade connectivity. Full completion of the EMH2 expansion is targeted for 2026, building on the successful operational start of the initial phase.
This initiative highlights continued progress in port infrastructure, supporting reliable and modern services for global shipping needs.
