en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has announced the latest construction progress on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley (BSVII) Phase II Extension Project, which includes an approximately 6-mile rail line and four new stations, planning to extend the line from Berryessa through downtown San Jose to Santa Clara, California.
VTA officials stated in the project update that, to date, construction crews have completed structural walls, most of the structural support systems, and about one-third of the concrete ramp work. Additionally, approximately three-quarters of the excavation work for the entire project has been completed, and the design of the 5-mile underground tunnel, a key component of the project, has been finished.
In terms of project management, the VTA Board of Directors has approved a shift in the construction contract model to a "Target Price/Incentive" type, with the partner being Kiewit Shea Traylor (KST). VTA officials stated that this contract model enhances cost transparency through open-book accounting and helps strengthen risk management and align incentives among parties to support efficient and accountable project delivery. As part of a phased delivery strategy, the board has authorized $400 million for early construction work, with future funding needs subject to further board approval.
Currently, construction crews are conducting preliminary work at the future 28th Street/Little Portugal BART station site, including demolition preparation and hazardous material removal assessments. Later this month, soil testing work will begin at the future Diridon BART station site. VTA officials also indicated that the project team is developing an updated BSVII project delivery timeline and cost data based on multiple significant cost-saving measures implemented over the past 18 months.
