Wedoany.com Report-Dec.27, ACCIONA Energía has begun supplying renewable energy to the grid from its Logrosán biomass plant in Cáceres, Spain.

ACCIONA Energía won the contract to build, operate, and maintain the Logrosán biomass plant from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.

The facility holds a capacity of 50 megawatts and is set to generate approximately 380 gigawatt-hours of electricity each year. This output helps avoid more than 187,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The reduction corresponds to the effect of removing around 60,000 conventional vehicles from the roads or planting about 9,000 trees.

The plant will use roughly 275,000 metric tonnes of biomass per year, sourced mainly from forestry residues in the surrounding region. Gathering this material supports active forest management practices, which reduce excess fuel accumulation in woodlands and lower the risk and severity of wildfires.

ACCIONA Energía secured the contract to build, operate, and maintain the Logrosán biomass plant through an award from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. The project came under the third auction for the renewable energy economic regime, providing a fixed price for electricity sales over 20 years.

During construction, the facility created more than 400 jobs. In ongoing operations and maintenance, it sustains about 30 permanent positions. Additionally, over 900 contractors and small-to-medium enterprises from agroforestry and transport sectors participate across the supply chain. Around 200 direct roles focus on collecting prunings, scrubland material, and other forestry residues, contributing to year-round land management and wildfire prevention efforts in the local area.

The project brings substantial economic advantages to the region. Approximately one-third of the plant's revenue returns to the local community through services, employment opportunities, and procurement activities.

Earlier this month, ACCIONA Energía also commenced commercial operations at its 480MWp Aldoga solar farm in Queensland, Australia. This development marks another step in the company's expansion of renewable energy infrastructure.

The Logrosán biomass plant stands as a significant addition to Spain's renewable energy landscape. It provides dispatchable power that can operate continuously and respond to demand variations, supporting grid stability alongside other renewable sources. The initiative highlights the integration of environmental benefits with local economic growth and sustainable resource use.
