Wedoany.com Report-Dec.29, U.S. K2 Pure Solutions announced that its commercial low-carbon hydrogen project in Pittsburg, California, has officially commenced construction. The project, scheduled to begin operations in early summer 2026, aims to produce high-pressure hydrogen using by-products from K2's existing chlor-alkali plant, supplying municipal and industrial customers. This marks a new practical step forward in the development of California's hydrogen economy.

The project will expand upon K2's local chlor-alkali production facility, capturing, purifying, and compressing hydrogen generated during the production process to establish commercial supply capabilities. The new high-pressure hydrogen system will be designed in accordance with California's stringent clean fuel market standards to meet regional decarbonization needs. Under an exclusive cooperation agreement with PACC Services, the latter will be responsible for the marketing, customer development, and logistics distribution of this hydrogen product.

K2 Pure Solutions CEO Howard Brodie commented on this: "Breaking ground on this project is not just a milestone in the construction process; it signifies that California's hydrogen economy is beginning to enter a phase of scaled development." The company's Chairman, David Cynamon, pointed out that the project reflects the company's long-term commitment to supporting California's clean energy goals and is an important practical step in translating hydrogen discussions into actual construction.

According to estimates, using the U.S. Department of Energy's GREET carbon accounting model, the lifecycle carbon intensity of the hydrogen produced by this project is expected to be reduced by approximately 95% compared to traditional fossil fuel-based hydrogen production (gray hydrogen). PACC Services CEO Andrew Carman stated: "PACC is honored to partner with K2 Pure Solutions to introduce new hydrogen supply into the California market. Our goal is to build commercial bridges in a fragmented market and, through collaboration with producers, deliver hydrogen products to end-users."

Tyson Eckerle, Senior Advisor to the California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development, commented that the project demonstrates the potential of converting industrial by-products into clean energy and is entirely driven by private capital. Jordan Davis, Director of Community and Economic Development for the City of Pittsburg, stated that while continuing the local industrial tradition, this project also positions the city at the forefront of California's clean energy development.
