Wedoany.com Report on Feb 13th, Finland has initiated a lithium mining project developed by Keliber in the Kaustinen region of western Finland, marking the establishment of Europe's first battery-grade lithium production system. This project covers the complete domestic value chain, from mining and mineral processing to refining lithium hydroxide in Kokkola. It is currently the only integrated operational facility in Europe capable of directly producing battery materials from ore. The total investment is approximately 800 million euros, with 80% held by the South African mining company Sibanye-Stillwater and the remaining 20% owned by the state-owned Finnish Minerals Group.
The launch of this lithium mining project will help enhance Europe's self-production capacity in battery materials and reduce dependence on external supply chains. By integrating mining and refining processes, the project is expected to improve the utilization efficiency of lithium resources and support the development of industries such as electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. Leveraging its abundant mineral resources and technological expertise, Finland is gradually becoming a key link in Europe's lithium industry chain.
With the growing global demand for battery materials, the operation of Finland's lithium mine project will promote local employment and economic development while supporting Europe's green transition. In the future, the project may expand further to meet the ongoing market demand for battery-grade lithium and strengthen Europe's competitiveness in the global battery supply chain.
