Wedoany.com Report on Mar 6th, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) have recently signed a contract for the joint construction of a next-generation crude oil tanker. This contract includes a real-sea performance guarantee clause, which goes beyond the traditional calm-sea speed guarantee, aiming to reduce fuel consumption and enhance operational efficiency. The contract also features an incentive mechanism to share benefits between the shipowner and the shipyard based on performance achievements.
Since September 2020, the two parties have collaborated to develop objective technical methods for evaluating hull performance under real weather and route conditions. As pioneering partners in attempting real-sea performance guarantees, their joint verification revealed minimal discrepancies between pre-agreed performance curves and measured data. For this new tanker, NYK and JMU will conduct joint verification during its first year of operation to optimize future design models.
The traditional guarantee system in the shipping industry is based on calm-sea sea trials, which often fail to accurately reflect resistance, route, and weather conditions encountered during actual operations. By shifting to real-sea performance guarantees, NYK and JMU align risks and rewards with measurable operational outcomes. This approach encourages design choices that prioritize service efficiency and promotes reductions in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
