Wedoany.com Report on Mar 9th, Recently, Abubakar Kyari, Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, stated that the Federal Government is enhancing food security, creating employment opportunities, and improving rural infrastructure by strengthening agricultural value chains. Kyari pointed out: "The government has prioritized key agricultural value chains such as rice, maize, wheat, millet, sorghum, yam, cocoa, cassava, soybean, cotton, onion, tomato, and oil palm, aiming to position Nigeria as a significant player in the global agricultural market."
This agricultural value chain strategy provides development opportunities for millions of smallholder farmers, helping them transition from subsistence farming to profitable agricultural operations. Kyari emphasized that the government's goals are to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen food security, and promote economic growth. Collaboration with all stakeholders is crucial to addressing challenges in the sector.
Over the past two years, Nigeria has implemented a series of interventions to improve agricultural output. For instance, it distributed over 1.9 million bags of fertilizer to nearly 1 million farmers and promoted the use of organic fertilizers to support sustainable soil management. From 2024 to 2025, rural development projects included the construction of approximately 170 kilometers of asphalt roads and 57 kilometers of earth roads to enhance market accessibility.
Nigeria has also installed 296 motorized and solar-powered boreholes and water treatment facilities to enhance rural communities' access to clean water. Concurrently, the government installed 3,596 solar streetlights to improve safety and constructed 69 rural housing and market facilities to stimulate economic activity and alleviate poverty.
The global food system continues to face risks from climate change and supply disruptions. Experts caution that reliance on imports can lead to food shortages, necessitating stronger policies and investments to build a more resilient national food system.
