Wedoany.com Report on Mar 11th, The construction progress of the large-scale Perur seawater desalination plant project, located near Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India, has currently reached approximately 62%. Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, this desalination plant is being constructed using a Design-Build-Operate model and will have a daily treatment capacity of 400 million liters upon completion. The total project cost is estimated at 60.78 billion rupees, with overall completion scheduled for March 2027.

The engineering team is currently focusing on connecting the seawater intake pipelines to the caisson structures to ensure effective seawater collection and conveyance to the plant for processing. The supporting infrastructure for this desalination plant includes two intake pipelines with a diameter of 2500 mm, extending 10 meters into the seabed, and a 756-meter-long discharge pipeline for disposing of concentrated brine into the deep sea. According to the project schedule, trial operation of this desalination plant is planned to commence in September 2026, paving the way for its formal operation.

Upon full completion and commissioning, the plant will be operated by a consortium comprising VA Tech Wabag Ltd. and Metito Overseas for a period of 20 years. The completion of this desalination plant will help provide a stable and reliable freshwater supply for local residents and businesses, effectively alleviating water stress in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and playing a significant role in ensuring regional water resource security.
