Wedoany.com Report on Mar 11th, As students leave for spring break, Harris County Precinct 4 will launch a major crosswalk improvement project, expected to upgrade over 60 crosswalks. On March 6th, Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones officially announced the implementation plan for the "Precinct 4 Crosswalk Improvements" project during spring break at a press conference held in front of Morton Ranch High School.

Commissioner Briones emphasized in the press release: "From redesigning crosswalks to upgrading traffic signals and rebuilding sidewalks, we are committed to creating safer streets for our children and families. Safety knows no holiday, and county work doesn't stop. Our core mission is to do everything we can to keep every family safe." This project will involve repainting road markings for crosswalks, curbs, and stop signs, with a special focus on upgrades for 12 "high-traffic school zones" selected based on accident data and community feedback, with a total investment exceeding $171,000.
The improvement project covers multiple school districts, including Holub Middle School and Alief Taylor High School in the Alief Independent School District, Thornton Middle School in the Cy-Fair Independent School District, Golbow Elementary School in the Katy Independent School District, as well as charter schools like Calvin Nelms Charter School. Additionally, Briones is collaborating with Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Council Member Abbie Kamin to advance the construction of advanced technology crosswalks citywide in Houston, equipped with button-activated flashing beacons and accessible ramps, with partial funding coming from Kamin's $60,000 contribution.
Briones, a mother of three and former teacher, always prioritizes safety. She pointed out that a one-mile stretch near Morton Ranch High School witnessed three fatal accidents and approximately 19 serious injury accidents within five years, highlighting the urgency of the improvements. Henry Azi, a sophomore at Morton Ranch High School, also stated: "Repainting the crosswalks might seem like a small thing, but for students who walk to school every day, it means a lot."
