en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 26th, Alstom has entered into a 12-year locomotive maintenance agreement with LKAB Malmtrafik in Sweden, effective from January 1, 2026. The agreement covers technical support and spare parts supply for 34 IORE heavy-haul locomotives used in iron ore transportation, aiming to ensure the reliable operation of freight rail.
Announced on March 25, 2026, this maintenance agreement pertains to the IORE locomotive model, specifically designed for heavy freight and operating year-round in the harsh conditions of northern Sweden. Karl-Peder Ölund, Customer Director at Alstom, stated: "We are proud of LKAB Malmtrafik's trust in us and are fully committed to supporting the reliable rail service that is crucial for mineral transport in Sweden."
The agreement extends the partnership between the two parties, which began with the delivery of IORE locomotives in 2001 and was renewed in December 2025. Alstom will provide high fleet availability, predictable costs, and continuous technical support to ensure stable mining operations.
Alstom is modernizing the IORE fleet, including the installation of ERTMS/ETCS systems, to extend their service life and ensure safe transport on the Malmbanan line. These locomotives play a critical role in Sweden's industrial supply chain, facilitating the transport of iron ore from northern mines to global markets.
The scope of delivery includes comprehensive technical support, spare parts supply, component refurbishment, and obsolescence management, leveraging Alstom's FlexCare Perform service and global network. Specific work will be carried out at workshops in Luleå, Västerås, and Kiruna, with support from sites in Switzerland, England, and Germany.
Katarina Albertsson, Head of Locomotives and Railway Wagons at LKAB Malmtrafik, said: "Safe and predictable rail operations are fundamental to our mining and logistics business. This long-term agreement with Alstom ensures high availability for our locomotive fleet and provides the stability we need to plan our production and deliveries."
