en.Wedoany.com Reported - Westport, the project agency under the Western Australian state government, has unveiled the preferred design for the state's new A$7.2 billion container port. The port will be located in the Kwinana industrial area, replacing Fremantle as the state's primary container gateway.

According to the plan, the new port will be built between Barter Road and Mason Road, along with new marine infrastructure and port facilities. To connect the port with the hinterland logistics network, the project plans to integrate freight corridors along Anketell Road and Thomas Road, and upgrade Anketell Road, Kwinana Freeway, and Roe Highway. Additionally, the freight rail network linking the port to logistics hubs in Kenwick, Kewdale, and Forrestfield will be strengthened.

Westport stated that the design aims to ensure the future development of the state's freight and container industries. This option was chosen to minimize environmental impact while supporting Cockburn Sound and its long-term health. The design also includes a new shipping channel capable of handling larger vessels.

During the site selection process, from 2018 to 2010, a total of 25 potential port sites were evaluated between Fremantle, Cockburn Sound, and Bunbury. After screening, seven port concepts were narrowed down to three Kwinana site options, and the preferred design was ultimately determined through workshops and studies.
