en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 26th, As Thailand's second-largest metropolitan area with a population nearing one million, Chiang Mai's urban expansion has driven the continuous evolution of its public transportation system planning. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) is spearheading the development of the Chiang Mai Light Rail Transit system. The latest proposal outlines the construction of three lines aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and reducing pollution.

The Chiang Mai Light Rail Transit system comprises the Red Line, Blue Line, and Green Line, with a total length of approximately 40.6 kilometers. The Red Line, spanning 15.65 kilometers, will connect Chiang Mai International Airport, Chiang Mai University, and Nakornping Hospital. The Blue Line, at 11.14 kilometers, will pass by Chiang Mai Zoo, Tha Phae Gate, and Chiang Mai Railway Station. The Green Line, extending 13.81 kilometers, will run from the airport to the Mae Jo intersection. These lines are designed to cover major transportation hubs, aiming to enhance urban travel efficiency.

In 2026, MRTA released study results for an extension of the Red Line, targeting operational commencement by 2032. Transport Minister Suriya has stated, "The proposed underground tunnel through the old city will require additional investment." In 2024, feasibility studies for sections of the Chiang Mai Electrified Rail System were initiated. The project is estimated to cost 30 billion Thai baht, addressing concerns related to the protection of historical sites.

The planning for the Chiang Mai Light Rail system dates back to the early 2000s and has undergone multiple revisions. MRTA plans to call for tenders in 2027, with the construction period projected from 2028 to 2031. The system is viewed as a key initiative to tackle PM2.5 pollution and boost tourism. It will be integrated with a feeder bus network to form a comprehensive transportation system.
