en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 27th, The Italian energy group MAIRE has recently signed a contract worth $50 million to undertake the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Guaracara refinery complex in the Point a Pierre area of Trinidad and Tobago. This initiative aims to enhance the operational efficiency of the facility and support its restart plan. The refinery revamp project will be executed by MAIRE's integrated E&C solutions unit Tecnimont through its subsidiary Tecnimont Services. It involves a comprehensive technical assessment and integrity check of the facility, which has a daily processing capacity of approximately 150,000 barrels.
The initial phase of the project will focus on identifying critical upgrade requirements for the complex, evaluating whether existing technologies can meet long-term performance goals, while also reviewing energy efficiency, environmental impact, and designing advanced water intake and cooling systems that comply with international standards. Based on the assessment results, Tecnimont Services will develop preliminary capital and operational expenditure estimates to support the final restart of the refinery.
The first and second phases are expected to be completed by early 2027. Subsequently, the project will proceed to the front-end engineering design and the full engineering, procurement, and construction phases, ultimately extending to operations and maintenance to achieve a comprehensive facility transformation. This contract highlights Tecnimont's expertise in complex upgrade projects, incorporating green energy and digital solutions.
Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE, stated: "This project strengthens our geographical diversification and expands our business footprint in Central America, confirming the strategic importance of upgrade initiatives. By applying our engineering expertise, we are committed to transforming existing assets into more efficient and environmentally friendly facilities. The upgrade of the Guaracara refinery is expected to bring tangible benefits to the local economy, fostering industrial development and skills enhancement."
