en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 30th, Recently, the construction of the CHN Energy—Dongfang Electric Mori 1,000 MW Carbon Dioxide Compressed Air Energy Storage Integrated Energy Demonstration Project, located in Mori County, Xinjiang, China, has been accelerating, with plans to achieve grid-connected power generation in October this year. The project plans to build 600 MW of wind power and 400 MW of photovoltaic power, accompanied by 1,000 MWh of energy storage. It is one of the larger-scale compressed carbon dioxide energy storage projects under construction globally.
Since its commencement in September 2024, the project team has overcome the impact of extreme weather through scientific organization, shortening the construction period by three months. Currently, the main plant building has been topped out, marking the project's entry into the equipment installation and commissioning phase. Wei Ping, Deputy Manager of the CHN Energy Xinjiang Mori Compressed Carbon Dioxide Energy Storage Project, stated: "The main plant building, evaporation and condensation room, integrated refrigeration plant building, and carbon dioxide gas storage tanks have been completed. The turbine and compressor bodies are installed, and the matrix-type pressure storage unit equipment is in place. Pipeline connection and welding are currently underway. The reverse power transmission equipment is being debugged, with the target of completing reverse power transmission by April 30."
This project, covering 848 acres, employs non-combustion compressed carbon dioxide energy storage technology. It utilizes surplus electricity from new energy sources to compress and liquefy carbon dioxide for storage, releasing it during peak electricity consumption periods to drive turbines for power generation. It achieves 8 hours of energy storage and 10 hours of power generation, with the entire process being fossil fuel-free and zero-carbon. As a supporting demonstration project for Xinjiang's "Desert-Gobi-Wasteland" base, it helps stabilize wind and photovoltaic power output.
Sima Leigang, Manager of the CHN Energy Xinjiang Mori Compressed Carbon Dioxide Energy Storage Project, introduced: "This is China's first 100 MW-scale carbon dioxide gas-liquid phase change energy storage project. It adopts ground-level low-pressure gas storage units, offering economic efficiency, safety, and broad applicability. Upon commissioning, it is expected to generate 200 million kWh of electricity annually, saving 50,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 170,000 tons per year." The project has been selected for the National Energy Administration's fourth batch of the "First (Set) of Major Technical Equipment in the Energy Sector" list and is a Green and Low-Carbon Advanced Technology Demonstration Project of the National Development and Reform Commission.
