en.Wedoany.com Reported - Cardiff Council has unveiled plans for 60 new council homes in the Cathays area, as part of its commitment to deliver over 4,500 new homes in response to high demand and limited supply of affordable housing.
The proposal will be considered at the Cabinet meeting on 16 July. The proposed development is located on the former Co-op store and office building site at 62-64 Crwys Road, featuring a five-storey mixed-use building providing 60 apartments for council rent, along with a community centre and ground-floor retail space.

Cllr Lynda Thorne, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said the council is exploring additional delivery options beyond its core new-build programme to help meet affordable housing demand. Under the proposal, the council would enter into a purchase agreement with developer Willowmead Holdings Ltd (WHL) to acquire the completed development. Subject to Cabinet approval, due diligence, and grant funding, construction is expected to be completed by summer 2028. As part of the project, the council is working with the Cathays Community Group to relocate from its existing building on Cathays Terrace to the new ground-floor community space. The Cabinet will formally consider the proposal at its next meeting.
