en.Wedoany.com Reported - Polish State Railways (PKP) has awarded the construction contract for the new railway station in Mielec, restoring the city's status as a key node in Poland's rail network.

The existing station has been closed for years, with preliminary demolition work expected to begin this summer. The new station will replace the old one, featuring a modern single-story building with a contemporary glass curtain wall design, aimed at improving passenger facilities and enhancing accessibility.
The project builds on the restoration of long-distance train services to Mielec by PKP Intercity at the end of 2024, coinciding with the resumption of regional passenger services following the modernization of railway lines and station infrastructure.
The new station is designed to meet the needs of modern passengers while improving accessibility for all users. The building will feature a heated and air-conditioned waiting room, a passenger hall, restrooms, and retail space suitable for a café or convenience store. Office space and technical facilities for the railway company will also be included in the development. The station will provide accessibility features for passengers with reduced mobility, including tactile paving, Braille signage, and tactile station maps to assist blind and visually impaired travelers. Electronic passenger information displays and a public address system will provide real-time train information, while photovoltaic panels, heat pumps, and a Building Management System (BMS) will enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
Polish Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak stated: "Since the end of 2024, PKP Intercity has been operating long-distance connections to Mielec, and the city will soon gain a completely new railway station built from scratch." Deputy Secretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Piotr Malepszak, added: "A good passenger experience is always composed of specific elements: infrastructure that meets the needs of all travelers, comfortable trains, attractive timetables, and modern tools for checking connections and purchasing tickets."
The investment is part of PKP's "Passenger-Friendly Stations" programme, which aims to modernize railway stations across Poland. The station was designed by An Archi Group, and STRABAG has been appointed as the construction contractor. The project is scheduled for completion in 2027, depending on construction progress, technical inspections, and regulatory approvals.
The construction contract is valued at over PLN 9.17 million, with the total investment expected to exceed PLN 14.9 million. The project will also improve connections between the station, surrounding roads, and railway platforms, creating a more integrated transport hub in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship to meet growing passenger demand.
