en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Western Australian Government has committed over $5 million in its 2026-27 Budget to support critical regional air services. This funding will subsidise regional flights, helping to keep routes operational and control fares.

The budget includes $3.8 million for the inter-regional flight network operated by Nexus Airlines, and over $1.3 million for two Kimberley routes operated by Aviair to extend subsidy periods. The inter-regional network connects Geraldton, Karratha, Port Hedland, and Broome, while the Aviair routes serve Kununurra–Halls Creek–Balgo and Derby–Broome, improving accessibility for work, tourism, and healthcare services.

Western Australian Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said: "The Government is committed to supporting these critical inter-regional routes so regional communities can stay connected to essential services, job opportunities, and family. This investment is designed to cover rising fuel costs and ensure fare stability under the Regional Airfare Cap scheme, so residents don't face higher costs."

Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson noted that the funding aims to "keep these important services operating". He said: "Travel between regional cities and communities is vital for local economies, enabling residents to conduct business, access healthcare, and benefit from tourism. These services provide direct options, saving time and money."

This is the latest move by Western Australia to support the regional aviation industry, following earlier announcements to maintain prices under the Regional Airfare Cap scheme and cover additional fuel costs. The revised scheme sets 'high-demand' fare caps at a maximum of $265 or $385 one-way, and 'low-demand' fares at $199 and $299 respectively, covering destinations within 1,000km of Perth and beyond.

The Regional Airfare Cap scheme is managed in partnership with several airlines, with the Government investing an additional $122 million, extending it until 2031 to cover part of the fare differential.
