en.Wedoany.com Reported - The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and Ballymore celebrated the completion of the Bridgewater Road footbridge at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 14 May. Commissioned by LLDC, the £19 million footbridge was designed by architect William Matthews Associates with landscape architect BBUK Studio, and engineering support provided by Walsh, delivering a new permanent crossing over the Waterworks River in East London.

The 44-metre single-span steel structure footbridge was installed last summer by London-based construction firm Kilnbridge under a full-service contract. The project integrated the company's in-house expertise in demolition, steel fabrication, marine logistics, temporary works, and structural installation. Heavily constrained by the waterway, railway infrastructure, and limited crane access, the footbridge was assembled on a floating barge, floated into position, and jacked onto its permanent bearings. The works involved the demolition of an existing 1930s bridge, complex marine operations, underwater activities, and the fabrication and installation of high-strength structural steel.

Delivered in partnership with Homes England, the footbridge project serves as a gateway to the emerging Bridgewater Triangle residential neighbourhood, which is being developed by LLDC and Ballymore as a 50/50 joint venture. The footbridge also improves connections between the surrounding Greenway and Pudding Mill communities, and enhances walking and cycling links to Pudding Mill Lane DLR station.

Kilnbridge CEO Owen Dannatt said: "The Bridgewater Road footbridge is a powerful example of what can be achieved when early collaboration, practical engineering, and specialist delivery come together. From the outset, this was a highly constrained site that ruled out conventional solutions, so the team had to think differently." Ballymore CEO John Mulryan stated that beyond improving daily connectivity for local residents, the footbridge also establishes critical infrastructure for the next phase of the area's development.
