en.Wedoany.com Reported - North Macedonia's electricity distribution system operator EVN Macedonia has launched a supporting battery energy storage system next to its solar power plant in the northeastern part of the country. The company stated that the system can store electricity generated during the day and use it during the most favorable periods, helping to enhance the stability, flexibility, and efficiency of the energy system.
The energy storage facility located in Probištip has an installed capacity of 10 megawatts with a continuous discharge duration of 2 hours, corresponding to an energy storage capacity of 20 megawatt-hours. According to the announcement, this is the largest energy storage system under Austria's EVN Group and also the largest licensed battery energy storage facility in North Macedonia.
Previously, Turkish contractor YESS Power had completed a 30MW/60MWh energy storage system for its client Mey Energy at a solar power plant in Novaci. According to the latest information, the project is scheduled to enter commercial operation in the third quarter.
Fortis Energy is also advancing similar projects in North Macedonia, while planning to build a large-scale solar power plant equipped with an energy storage system in Serbia, and has already commenced construction of a similar facility in neighboring Albania. Another hybrid energy facility is under construction in North Macedonia, which includes a battery energy storage system supporting an existing solar power plant. Albania's first grid-scale battery energy storage system has recently been put into operation. Other projects in the Western Balkans region remain in early stages.
The energy storage system utilizes CATL lithium iron phosphate battery cells, designed for a lifespan of 10 years or 10,000 cycles. The containers housing the batteries and K Star power conversion systems cover an area of 580 square meters. The facility received its operating license on April 9.
EVN Macedonia commenced power generation operations at the solar power plant two years ago, with the plant having a peak capacity of 10.9 megawatts. The commissioning ceremony was attended by board members, subsidiary management, municipal officials from Probištip, university professors, and representatives from the contractor Intebako. Chairman of the Management Board Wolfgang Maier stated: "Soon, the system's capacity will be doubled to 40 megawatt-hours, as the relevant equipment has already been delivered and is entering the installation phase."
