en.Wedoany.com Reported - Transport for Wales (TfW) will launch an accessible infrastructure upgrade project at Cathays station, north of Cardiff Central station, by constructing a new "Access for All" (AFA) footbridge to improve station accessibility and enhance safety. Work will begin on June 13.

This upgrade is part of the South Wales Metro program. The new footbridge will feature step-free elevator access for wheelchairs, improved walkways, and direct access to the Cardiff University Student Life Centre. The rail operator stated that these improvements aim to fulfill TfW's commitment to "providing a more reliable, faster, greener, and more accessible transport system for communities across Wales."

Dan Tipper, TfW's Chief Infrastructure Officer, said: "This investment is a significant step in our ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and modernize stations across Wales. The new footbridge will make Cathays station safer, easier to navigate, and more user-friendly for everyone." He added that the project is being carried out in close collaboration with Cardiff University and other local businesses to ensure it supports the needs of students and the surrounding community.

The project will be implemented in phases. Phase one begins on June 13, focusing on early preparatory work, including site setup, pedestrian diversions, initial excavation, and cable works. During this phase, walking routes will remain largely unchanged, and all work areas will be safely fenced off to maintain normal station operations.

Phase two is expected to commence in autumn 2026. From October, site activity will increase as construction accelerates, with the new footbridge, elevators, and related structures expected to be completed. This phase may involve more intensive activity, including heavy machinery operations, additional material transport, and temporary adjustments to walking routes.

Senior Project Manager Alex Phillips stated that the team will focus on efficiently completing preparatory work while ensuring the station remains operational.
