en.Wedoany.com Reported - Rolls-Royce Power Systems has signed an agreement with Baltic renewable energy company Sunly to build four battery energy storage facilities in Latvia, with a total storage capacity of 490 megawatt-hours.

The signing was announced at the opening ceremony of Sunly's new solar park in Valmiera, one of Latvia's first hybrid energy parks.

The first battery system, located in Valmiera, is scheduled to become operational in the first quarter of 2027, with the remaining three projects expected to be completed later that year.

Rolls-Royce will provide a complete solution, including the mtu EnergyPack system and the mtu EnergetIQ software platform, to manage energy storage and release, supporting grid stability and helping balance supply and demand.

Rolls-Royce will act as the general contractor, providing a single point of responsibility across design, supply, and construction.

Andreas Görtz, President of the Mobile and Sustainable Business Unit at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, stated that as the general contractor, the company offers clients a single point of contact to reduce risk and complexity, ensure profitable performance, and maximize long-term asset value. The large-scale battery energy storage system delivered in collaboration with Sunly will play a key role in strengthening grid stability and energy security in the Baltic region.

Sunly chose Rolls-Royce based on its track record in the region and its ability to meet technical and cybersecurity requirements.

The partnership will also extend to Estonia, where a memorandum of understanding has been signed for an additional 300 MWh battery energy storage project in Risti.

Priit Lepasepp, CEO of Sunly, stated that the company's goal is to build an energy system that serves people, rather than generating power only when the sun shines. By combining solar power with battery storage, energy can be supplied on demand, making renewable energy more reliable and less dependent on weather. Given the strict cybersecurity requirements, it was crucial to find a European partner that has already demonstrated expertise in Latvia.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems reports that it has provided mtu battery energy storage solutions for over 200 projects worldwide. In the Baltic region, after the completion of the signed projects, the installed battery energy storage capacity is expected to exceed 1.5 gigawatt-hours.

Since 2025, another Rolls-Royce battery energy storage system has been operating in Latvia, serving transmission system operator Augstsprieguma tikls.
