en.Wedoany.com Reported - Detroit-based utility company DTE Energy is investing $1.6 billion to partner with LG Energy Solution Vertech to deploy grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Michigan.

The contract involves eight BESS projects, with a total generation capacity of nearly 1.5 GW and 6 GWh over the next two years.

Jaehong Park, CEO of LG Energy Solution Vertech (the US energy storage division of South Korea's LG Energy Solution), stated that Michigan is a key manufacturing region for the company in the US, where many employees live and work. The company is pleased to collaborate with DTE to bring Michigan-made energy storage systems to the grid. As more US-made energy storage projects come online, the state will create high-skilled jobs that support the nation's energy needs.

Last year, LG Energy Solution Vertech opened a $1.4 billion factory in Holland, Michigan, to produce lithium iron phosphate batteries.

Battery storage capacity has been used for years to store and balance intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Today, it is employed as a flexible tool to manage transient load fluctuations from computer data centers and provide grid services to maintain system balance.

Microgrid and distributed energy resource developers such as VoltaGrid, PowerSecure, and ELM Microgrid are increasingly integrating projects with battery storage.

DTE Energy is also committed to decarbonizing and decentralizing its generation structure through microgrids and other distributed energy resources, including a 100-megawatt solar project in Michigan to help Ford Motor Company offset carbon emissions. The utility is also building a microgrid at Delta Electronics' manufacturing facility in the Detroit area.
