en.Wedoany.com Reported - Transnet is planning to introduce automated gates at the Port of Cape Town and expand its digital booking system to alleviate truck congestion, improve cargo flow, and accelerate container terminal processing speeds.
Speaking at the recent Ocean Economy Conference in Cape Town, Acting Port Manager Ophelia Shabane stated that these projects are part of Transnet's digital strategy to modernize port operations and enhance customer service. Shabane noted that Transnet has already implemented some digital measures through the Integrated Port Management System (IPMS), allowing customers to book maritime services online without manual processing of service requests, thereby making it more convenient to secure vessel berthing services.
The digital platform covers online booking for maritime services, a truck booking system, and reservations for ship repair facilities. The planned introduction of automated gates at container terminals is another key project expected to speed up truck processing times and improve cargo flow. Shabane mentioned that the A-check (entry inspection point) at the Port of Cape Town is one of the main congestion points, and the automated gates will significantly reduce the time trucks take to enter the terminal, enabling drivers to complete pickups and deliveries more quickly.
Digitalization is also being integrated into terminal operations and equipment procurement. Shabane stated that the rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) recently put into operation at the Cape Town Container Terminal have digital capabilities. She noted that information and communication technology and artificial intelligence will play a greater role in improving efficiency and helping Transnet achieve its strategic goals, and these technologies should be viewed as productivity tools rather than threats to employment. Using the remotely operable RTG as an example, Shabane emphasized that even with digitalization, operators are still needed to control each machine; however, under conditions such as strong winds, employees can work safely in a controlled environment while maintaining productivity.
Shabane added that Transnet is leveraging international best practices through partnerships with global ports, including the Port of Antwerp, to enhance operational efficiency and accelerate the digitalization process.
