New York’s Chinatown, where the prison will be built

Wedoany.com Report-Feb 25, A joint venture between US-based contractors Tutor Perini and O&G has won a $3.8 billion deal to build a state-of-the-art prison for New York City’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC). The facility, located on the site of the iconic Tombs complex in Chinatown, will house up to 1,040 inmates. It features indoor and outdoor recreation areas, staff offices, and 125 underground parking spaces, along with 1,858 square meters of community and commercial space on the ground floor. O&G holds a 25% stake in the contract and has partnered with Missouri-based architect HOK as the design partner. Construction is set to begin in the coming months and is expected to take a total of seven years and three months to complete. The project is part of a broader effort by Tutor Perini to expand its prison-building capabilities across the country. Notably, in 2023, the firm also won a $3 billion design-and-build contract for a prison in Brooklyn and a $49 million project to address structural issues at Alcatraz. This deal underscores Tutor Perini’s growing influence in the prison construction industry, aiming to meet the demand for secure facilities while adhering to high-quality standards. The completion of this prison will significantly enhance the city’s capacity to house inmates and support its efforts in corrections and rehabilitation programs.
