The old bridge opened in 1977 and was knocked over by an out-of-control container ship last March, killing six construction workers

Wedoany.com Report-Feb 25, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, alongside the Maryland Department of Transportation, revealed the design concept for the new Francis Scott Key Bridge this month. The structure will replace the bridge that collapsed last March after a container ship lost control and struck it, resulting in the deaths of six construction workers.

The governor’s office stated that this design concept paves the way for completing the final design and securing regulatory approvals prior to starting construction. The project team plans to collect public feedback on non-structural design features to ensure the bridge reflects the preferences of Maryland residents.

Governor Moore remarked: “Today, we take an important step toward recovering from the tragic Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse that has affected not just Maryland’s economy, but the nation’s economy.” He also noted: “While we mark the unveiling of the new bridge design, we continue to honour the six Marylanders who lost their lives while serving our state, and their families who carry their legacy forward.”

To support the Port of Baltimore’s prominence on the East Coast, Moore announced a state investment of $15 million in Tradepoint Atlantic’s Terminal Container Project. This initiative aims to boost container capacity by 70 percent. The governor indicated that the expansion would attract over $1 billion in private investment and lead to the creation of 8,000 new jobs.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott described the new design concept as “an important step in the recovery from a deep tragedy for the city, state, and country.” The unveiling signifies progress in addressing the economic and emotional impact of the bridge’s collapse, which disrupted local and national supply chains.

The replacement bridge project focuses on restoring a vital transportation link while incorporating community input to shape its final appearance. The design phase follows a thorough evaluation of structural needs, ensuring the new bridge meets safety and functionality standards. The state’s investment in the port underscores a broader effort to enhance infrastructure and economic opportunities in the region.

The loss of the original Francis Scott Key Bridge last March highlighted the importance of resilient infrastructure. The incident claimed the lives of six workers engaged in maintenance, prompting a commitment to honor their memory through this redevelopment. The combined efforts on the bridge and port expansion reflect a coordinated approach to recovery and growth in Maryland.
