en.Wedoany.com Reported - Network Rail's new Kirk Hill Bridge project in Sutton Bonington is progressing well, with the team having installed 14,000 bricks for the new parapet walls on the structure.
The project aims to create the necessary clearance for large freight trains, enabling more goods to be transported by rail and improving maintenance access. This will help lift long-standing speed restrictions and enhance line reliability. Should the Midland Main Line electrification restart in the future, the new bridge will also provide sufficient overhead space for electric or bi-mode trains.
Work began in September 2025, delivered by Network Rail with main contractor AmcoGiffen. The team has so far completed: installing a temporary utility bridge to safely carry gas, electricity, water, and broadband services during demolition and reconstruction; demolishing the old bridge during a planned Christmas possession; installing new bridge components using three overnight weekend shifts; and constructing new parapet walls using high-strength concrete and 14,000 bricks to meet modern safety standards. By scheduling key construction work during nights, weekends, and the Christmas period, engineers ensured the railway remained open to passengers throughout the project.
Remaining tasks include reconnecting utilities to the new bridge deck and completing associated road and drainage works. The road closure is expected to be lifted by the end of July, with full project completion scheduled for September.
Katie Oliver, Portfolio Manager at Network Rail, said the team has made excellent progress on the upgrade, safely demolishing the old structure and rebuilding the new bridge while minimizing disruption to passengers and the railway. She thanked local residents for their patience during the construction period, stating that the upgraded bridge will deliver long-term benefits for passengers and freight, and also prepare the route for potential future electrification.
