en.Wedoany.com Reported - Civil engineering specialist Barhale has secured a £16 million contract from Yorkshire Water to design and construct a new service reservoir in Scarborough. The project is part of Yorkshire Water's AMP8 investment plan, aimed at strengthening the long-term water supply resilience of the region.

Barhale construction workers wearing high-visibility personal protective equipment at a water infrastructure project site.

The new Springhill SRE No. 3 reservoir will be a twin-compartment reinforced concrete facility with a capacity of 17.3 megalitres (ML), located at Springhill near Scarborough. Once operational, it will replace two aging reservoirs—the 93-year-old Springhill SRE No. 1 (capacity 15 ML) and Springhill SRE No. 2 (capacity 2.6 ML)—ensuring sufficient storage capacity to meet current and anticipated future demand.

The external dimensions of the new structure are 55 metres by 77 metres, with a height of 5 metres. Internally, it consists of two equal compartments, each measuring 54 metres by 38 metres, hydraulically balanced with the existing Springhill reservoir to optimise water distribution in the area.

Barhale will deliver the project using a hybrid construction method. The base slab will be cast in situ, while precast walls, columns, and roof components will be manufactured off-site and then installed. This approach aims to enhance quality control, shorten construction timelines, and reduce on-site impact.

The concrete mix has been specifically designed to resist soft water attack and chemical degradation without relying on protective coatings, supplemented by enhanced durability detailing to ensure a service life of several decades.

The project scope extends beyond the reservoir structure. Barhale will install new inlet, outlet, and overflow pipework, along with associated pumping stations. The existing Springhill reservoir will be decommissioned and disconnected. Due to space constraints, the new reservoir will be constructed adjacent to the existing facility.

Johannes Esterhuyse, Barhale's Regional Director for Yorkshire, stated that the project is critical to safeguarding the long-term water supply resilience for Scarborough and surrounding communities. The new reservoir will provide the storage capacity needed to maintain service standards while allowing the safe retirement of the existing infrastructure. Barhale looks forward to working closely with Yorkshire Water to deliver a durable asset that will serve customers for decades to come.

Surveys are currently underway, with main construction works scheduled to begin in 2027.
