The facility has been fully operational since July 2026, with startup completed approximately two months ahead of schedule. This restart is a key initiative in Cimpor's decarbonization strategy and regional economic development.

Cimpor, a global cement group founded in 1890, operates across Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America, and is one of the world's leading cement producers. The Sines grinding station is located in one of Portugal's most important industrial and logistics hubs, adjacent to the Port of Sines. The facility had previously been idle.

After more than two years of technological conversion and modernization, the Sines grinding station has resumed operations. With an annual production capacity exceeding 400,000 tons, 2,500 tons of product were ready for shipment at the initial stage of production. The plant primarily produces Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS), a high-value supplementary cementitious material used in the production of low-carbon cement and concrete. This slag powder significantly reduces the carbon footprint of cement and concrete. The upgrade also provides the plant with future flexibility to process other alternative raw materials.

The facility's proximity to the Port of Sines offers a significant competitive advantage, facilitating the receipt of raw materials and the distribution of finished products to domestic and international markets. The reactivation of this facility contributes to the local economy by creating jobs and driving the development of regional suppliers.
