Petronas, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Petronas LNG Ltd. (PLL), signed this new agreement with JERA. Under the terms, starting from 2028, Malaysia will supply approximately 2 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG to Japan for 20 years.

The LNG will be delivered using Petronas' next-generation 174,000 cubic meter LNG carriers. These vessels are designed to comply with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) enhanced emission standards, supporting more efficient and lower-emission operations.

The signing of this agreement marks a shift from traditional point-to-point LNG supply deals towards more flexible supply arrangements, further highlighting Petronas' position as a reliable supplier through expanded supply capabilities.

Petronas stated that this agreement solidifies its role as a core supplier to Japan, one of the world's largest LNG importers, and deepens a partnership dating back to 1983. That year, Malaysia shipped its first LNG cargo to Japan, laying the foundation for a relationship now considered central to Japan's energy security.

Datuk Adif Zulkifli, Executive Vice President and CEO of Gas & Maritime Business at Petronas, stated that the company values its decades-long strong partnership with JERA, built on mutual trust and a shared focus on reliability, and looks forward to building on this foundation to support Japan's evolving energy needs. In an increasingly dynamic LNG market, Petronas remains focused on providing reliable and tailored solutions to support partners in strengthening their energy security and advancing their transition goals.

Petronas emphasized that it will continue to advance its commercial approach to meet Japan's changing requirements under the Seventh Strategic Energy Plan, ensuring stable energy supply while improving economic efficiency and environmental priorities in line with evolving demand. The company stated that as demand for clean energy continues to grow in Asia, Petronas is committed to providing reliable LNG from its global portfolio to support customers' current energy security and drive their transition towards a low-carbon future.

Alongside Petronas' recent launch of Searah, a 50-50 independent joint venture with Eni integrating key operations in Indonesia and Malaysia, JERA has also arranged a series of LNG supply agreements over the past few months, including a deal with QatarEnergy in February 2026.
