en.Wedoany.com Reported - Syngenta Group, a global agricultural innovation company, officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding with India's Annam.AI project on June 15, 2026, at the "Bharat Innovates 2026" event in Nice, France, becoming a strategic partner of this national open agricultural data intelligence platform. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron. Under the agreement, Syngenta will leverage its R&D and agronomic expertise to build core agricultural intelligence modules for the platform, including crop health, pest prediction, and heat stress models.

Annam.AI stands for the "Alliance for Next-gen Nourishment through Agriculture Modernization," and also means "food" in Sanskrit. The project is endorsed by India's Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, with technical support from global technology company Google, and is executed by the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar). The project aims to build India's first open-data-based national agricultural intelligence infrastructure, providing farmers with AI-powered hyperlocal farming advice by integrating crop intelligence, real-time microclimate data, and multilingual interaction tools.

India is a major agricultural country, with rice and wheat production ranking among the highest in the world. However, over 80% of the country's approximately 150 million farming households are smallholders, operating on less than two hectares of land. This fragmented scale of cultivation limits the realization of economies of scale and hinders the adoption of advanced technologies. Meanwhile, monsoon anomalies, droughts, and off-season rainfall caused by El Niño, coupled with pest and disease infestations, are estimated to cause crop losses of about 30% annually. The Annam.AI platform was developed in this context, aiming to bridge the technological gap between smallholders and precision agriculture using open data and public infrastructure as its foundation. The platform is expected to ultimately benefit over 600 million people dependent on agriculture.

Jeff Rowe, CEO of Syngenta Group, stated: "At Syngenta, we create breakthroughs for every farmer, achieving higher yields with lower environmental impact. Annam.AI offers a unique opportunity for us to contribute to the digital transformation of Indian agriculture, which will benefit over 600 million people in the country. We are deeply honored to work alongside the many talented and dedicated individuals in the Indian government and universities, as well as other innovation leaders, to realize this vision." Currently, the project is still in its early development stages, and Syngenta's R&D team will collaborate with IIT Ropar and other partners to advance the technology implementation.
