en.Wedoany.com Reported - German energy company EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) has officially commenced construction of a battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Philippsburg Energy Park. The project, with a planned power capacity of 400MW and energy capacity of 800MWh, will become one of the largest battery storage facilities in Germany upon completion.

Once operational, the system will meet the daily electricity needs of approximately 100,000 households, storing power generated from wind and solar energy. The construction site was previously home to two nuclear reactor units, which are currently being decommissioned. In addition to the storage project, transmission system operator TransnetBW has installed a DC converter at the same location. This equipment is part of the ULTRANET DC link project, which transmits wind power from northern Germany to the southwest.

EnBW's battery storage project adopts a subsidy-free financing model, with operational funding derived from electricity sales and revenues from grid services. These services help ensure reliable grid operation and stable power supply. The initial phase will involve building a pilot plant to compare and evaluate two different types of BESS. According to the plan, additional systems will be introduced next year, with the entire facility expected to commence commercial operations by the end of 2027.

Peter Heydecker, Chief Operating Officer for Sustainable Generation Infrastructure at EnBW, stated that the expansion of renewable energy requires flexible support systems. Battery storage facilities, together with hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants, ensure a reliable and affordable electricity supply. He believes that both technologies make significant contributions to energy security by balancing fluctuations in wind and solar power generation.

To date, EnBW operates 20 BESS facilities in Germany, with a total installed capacity exceeding 100MWh. The company is also advancing the construction of other storage facilities, with a combined capacity of 1800MWh. EnBW has further announced that all new solar power plants will be equipped with co-located BESS. In February of this year, the company signed a 15-year power purchase agreement with Google to procure 100MW of clean electricity from the He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.
