Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 2, Kona Energy has clinched a £40 million Capacity Market contract for its flagship 228MW Smeaton battery energy storage project in Scotland. The deal follows the approval of planning consent for the battery energy storage system (BESS) in East Lothian.
The 228MW/456MWh BESS is poised to rank among the UK’s most sophisticated grid-scale energy initiatives. It benefits from two “Protections” under the Grid Connection Reform and Clean Power 2030 plan, with the National Electricity System Operator (NESO) committed to connecting projects ahead of their scheduled Capacity Market delivery year. Kona notes this strengthens the project’s grid connection reliability and long-term prospects.
The contract was secured through the T-4 auction, a government-supported program designed to ensure electricity availability during high-demand periods. This milestone underscores the project’s role in supporting the UK’s energy infrastructure.
Andy Willis, founder of Kona Energy, remarked: “This is a defining moment for Kona Energy and the Smeaton project. Securing a £40m Capacity Market contract is a testament to the project’s quality and national importance. Smeaton will help tackle the UK’s growing grid challenges by transforming wasted renewable energy into a valuable resource.” He added: “As we advance towards delivery, we are actively engaging with select strategic partners who can bring the right expertise and capital to maximise the project’s potential. We are open for further discussions with third parties who can bring extensive value in order to deliver this project on the ambitious scale we are aiming for.”
Detailed design efforts are progressing, with Kona collaborating closely with Scottish Power Transmission and key supply chain partners. The Smeaton project aims to enhance grid stability by storing excess renewable energy, addressing inefficiencies and supporting Scotland’s clean energy goals.
