Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 9, Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has begun construction on the Windy Standard 3 wind farm, a multi-million-pound project in Scotland. The company serves as the principal contractor for this 20-turbine initiative, led by Fred Olsen Renewables in Dumfries and Galloway. Approved in 2021, the wind farm will generate 87.6 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to supply over 130,000 UK homes each year.
The scope of work for Jones Bros includes ground assessments, laying reinforced concrete foundations, and handling excavation and backfilling for cabling. The team will also construct over 10 kilometers of new access tracks and crane hardstands to support turbine delivery and setup. This contract, first noted by reNEWS on March 6, 2025, marks a significant step in the project’s timeline.
Jonathan Maitland, Jones Bros project manager, stated: “Our highly skilled team is pleased to have been given the green light on Windy Standard 3, which further strengthens our wind farm portfolio in Scotland. We look forward to working closely with Fred Olsen Renewables to add to the first two phases of the complex and boost the push towards clean power.” The collaboration builds on prior phases of the Windy Standard complex.
The project will employ around 45 staff, including apprentices, with recruitment focused on the local area to bolster Scotland-based personnel. Jones Bros plans to use an on-site batching plant to reduce vehicle traffic and improve efficiency. Maitland added: “It’s always fantastic to be able to create job opportunities for people in the community in which we work. As with all our projects, we will be actively looking to make the most of the local contractors to enhance our supply chain.”
Power generation is slated to begin in winter 2026, contributing to renewable energy goals in southwest Scotland. Sofie Olsen Jebsen, chief executive of Fred Olsen Renewables, remarked: “We are delighted to be starting construction on Windy Standard 3. This is a strategic project for Fred Olsen Renewables and demonstrates our continued commitment to the UK market. We equally look forward to working closely with our main contractors to successfully deliver the wind farm and allowing it to play a vital role in generating green energy, strengthening Scotland’s energy security and supporting the journey towards Clean Power 2030.”
Windy Standard 3 will integrate into the existing Windy Standard wind farm complex, expanding its capacity. The project underscores a joint effort to advance sustainable energy production while fostering economic benefits in Dumfries and Galloway through local hiring and supply chain engagement.
