en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Rhaetian Railway (RhB), together with the Swiss Federal Roads Office and the Canton of Graubünden, will jointly implement the Fideris-Küblis corridor renovation project, aiming to separate the railway from the N28 highway. Located in the Prättigau valley of Switzerland, the project addresses the current situation where the railway and highway run parallel in the narrow valley floor, suffering from tight curves, low speeds, and vulnerability to floods and mudslides.

The main scope of the project includes not only the construction of the Fideris Tunnel but also the relocation of the RhB line from the valley floor, allowing the N28 highway to be straightened and separated from local traffic. On the railway side, the new line will include a 1,377-meter-long single-track Fideris Tunnel, new bridge structures, and approach lines connecting to the existing double-track section before Küblis. Currently, RhB trains are limited to 45 km/h on this section; once the new infrastructure is completed, trains will reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h, reducing travel time by more than two minutes.

On the highway side, the project will construct a separate N28 national road line and a local road. The entire N28 highway section is designed for a speed of 80 km/h, with local traffic no longer mixing with through traffic. Additionally, the local road will provide an alternative route during national road maintenance or accidents.

The project includes seven new or renovated railway and highway bridges, including the future Oli Bridge at the eastern end of the Fideris Tunnel. A protected bridge will be renovated. All new structures are designed to meet flood protection requirements.

Due to construction needs, the Fideris station will be closed in 2030, and the protected station building will be relocated and preserved.

The total project budget is €498 million (approximately CHF 467.5 million), of which €318 million (CHF 298.5 million) is allocated for railway infrastructure and €180 million (CHF 169 million) for highway infrastructure. Preliminary work is scheduled to begin in 2028, with main tunnel excavation planned from 2029 to 2032. The railway tunnel will be operational by 2034, and the N28 highway along with local roads are planned for completion in 2037.
