en.Wedoany.com Reported - Cape Winelands Airport, in partnership with Stellenbosch University (SU), has launched an industry-academia collaboration centered on the airport's 8 billion rand expansion plan, aiming to transform the project into a regional economic hub. It is expected to create approximately 35,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase and support over 100,000 jobs in the first 20 years of operation.
Both parties stated that this long-term, large-scale project provides a unique platform for multidisciplinary practical learning, applied research, and industry collaboration. Engineering cooperation has been identified as a core component, involving technical collaboration, infrastructure innovation, operational efficiency improvements, and future-oriented aviation engineering solutions. Areas of collaboration include agriculture and food processing, spatial planning, transport and logistics, space and aviation research, as well as the integration of airport operations with urban development.
In terms of talent development, initial plans include establishing master's research projects within Stellenbosch University's engineering management program, focusing on topics aligned with the airport's strategic interests. Both parties will also explore the creation of facilities for testing, innovation, prototyping, and future production in the fields of aviation, infrastructure, logistics, and smart technologies. The airport expansion is also seen as an opportunity to build a pipeline for South Africa's future aviation talent, potentially involving pilot training pathways, airport operations, engineering disciplines, and transport logistics capacity building.
Deon Cloete, Managing Director of Cape Winelands Airport, noted that by connecting academia and industry, this collaboration can generate both economic and educational impacts, while building a long-term skills ecosystem that supports economic growth and human capital development in the Western Cape. Professor Sibusiso Moyo, Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, and International Affairs at Stellenbosch University, stated that this interdisciplinary engagement opportunity, extending from engineering to agriculture, will promote knowledge exchange and the implementation of innovative solutions. Professor Deresh Ramjugernath, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, believes the project will help establish a dynamic ecosystem that unlocks economic growth, supports emerging industries, and positions the region as an innovation hub.
As the airport continues to develop over the coming decades, the partners aim to ensure that academic research, innovation, and skills development remain closely aligned with the actual progress of this major aviation infrastructure project in South Africa, enabling students to engage in solving complex challenges in real-world settings, including aviation operations, infrastructure planning, engineering, logistics, sustainable development, environmental management, transport systems, and smart technologies.
