Wedoany.com Report-May 2, Glasgow City Council has granted planning permission to Dominus for a new student accommodation development on a brownfield site at the intersection of Old Wynd Street and Osborne Street. The location is close to the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University, making it ideal for student housing.
Facilities include a cinema room, games area, karaoke room, rooftop lounge and an external terrace.
The project, designed by tp bennett, will feature 173 studio rooms, including nine wheelchair-accessible units. It will also provide 9,500 square feet of communal spaces for residents. Amenities include a cinema room, games area, karaoke room, rooftop lounge, and an outdoor terrace, fostering a vibrant community for students.
The 13-storey building aims to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification, incorporating sustainable features such as air source heat pumps to reduce emissions. The development is expected to bring significant economic and social benefits to the area. During construction, it could support up to 290 full-time equivalent jobs and contribute £19 million in annual gross value added (GVA). Once completed, the project is projected to sustain around 15 full-time roles and generate approximately £700,000 in yearly GVA.
Previously, the site was approved for a 165-room hotel, with that permission valid until 2027. The shift to student accommodation reflects the rising demand for such housing in Glasgow. According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency, the city’s student population exceeded 75,000 in the 2022/2023 academic year, marking a 25% increase from 2017/2018.
Dominus planning associate Edward Law stated: “We are delighted to have received approval to transform this centrally located and underutilised brownfield site into 173 high-quality studio bedrooms alongside 9,500ft² of amenity space. Glasgow has one of the UK’s largest student populations with an undersupply of purpose-built student accommodation. This city centre site benefits from excellent transport links and being within walking distance of several leading universities.”
The development addresses the growing need for quality student housing in Glasgow while promoting sustainable design and economic growth.
