en.Wedoany.com Reported - American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest regulated water and wastewater utility in the United States, has released a white paper titled "Wastewater Solutions," outlining its industry position in delivering positive environmental outcomes for communities.
The white paper is based on American Water's review of multiple wastewater treatment systems across the country. The company details its approach to implementing multi-year infrastructure upgrades, operational improvements, and compliance oversight for systems acquired by its local state operating companies. The goal is to bring newly acquired wastewater treatment systems back into compliance while addressing long-term environmental risks and balancing customer affordability.
The white paper highlights the case of the Village of Godfrey, Illinois. Illinois American Water acquired the village's wastewater treatment system in 2019, assuming compliance and long-term management responsibilities. Village of Godfrey Mayor Mike McCormick stated that selling the system to Illinois American Water would "serve the well-being of residents now and in the future," and expressed confidence that its team of experts would ensure reliable service for years to come. He welcomed expanded collaboration between the two parties in the community.
Investing in the maintenance and upgrade of aging water and wastewater systems is critical to providing safe and reliable service. Over the next decade, American Water plans to invest approximately $48 billion in system capital improvements, covering infrastructure renewal, water quality enhancement, resilience strengthening, technology upgrades, and system acquisitions.
"Most of the nation's wastewater infrastructure is decades old, and reliable systems are essential to protecting public health and the environment," said John Griffith, President and CEO of American Water. He noted that the company is committed to providing safe, clean, reliable, and affordable water and wastewater services to the customers and communities it serves through sustained infrastructure investment.
American Water is the largest regulated water and wastewater utility in the United States, with a history dating back to 1886. The company serves approximately 14 million people across 14 states and 18 military bases.
