en.Wedoany.com Reported - New Delhi, the capital of India, is considering a new road tunnel link project with an estimated investment of nearly $740 million. The proposal involves constructing a new tunnel with three lanes in each direction, spanning approximately 8.1 kilometers, connecting Nelson Mandela Road in South Delhi to the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. The project aims to alleviate severe traffic congestion in New Delhi, reduce travel time, and improve traffic conditions along the Mahipalpur corridor, which connects Delhi's international airport to Gurugram.
This project is part of a broader transportation improvement plan for the Indian capital. If ultimately approved, the construction period is expected to be around five years, with plans to use a tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 13 meters. Completed projects include the Dwarka Expressway and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. Another planned project is a 32-kilometer, four-lane dual carriageway highway connecting Indira Gandhi International Airport to Noida International Airport.
The Indian government has recently approved several infrastructure projects. On July 1, 2026, the Indian Cabinet approved a six-lane tunnel project between the Dwarka Expressway in Delhi and Nelson Mandela Road, with a total length of 8.1 kilometers and an investment of 69.6967 billion Indian rupees. This project will be implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model under the National Highway (Original) Scheme.
If the new tunnel project is ultimately approved, it will become a significant addition to Delhi's transportation infrastructure, expected to significantly improve connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram, providing more convenient travel options for local residents and commuters.
