en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Municipality of Bluewater, Canada, announced that the expansion project of its Bayfield Wastewater Treatment Plant is substantially complete, and the facility is now fully operational after commissioning of the treatment processes, with new infrastructure capable of handling additional wastewater.
Bluewater Mayor Paul Klopp stated that the municipality is satisfied with the progress of the expansion project and appreciates receiving the substantial completion notice, which will help continue providing safe and valuable wastewater treatment services to residents and businesses in Bayfield.
The expansion project commenced on November 19, 2024. Previously, Bluewater received a grant of $8,347,185 CAD through the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund under Ontario's Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program. The main scope of the project involved installing a treatment plant at the Bayfield Lagoons to enhance wastewater treatment capacity. Project funding was partially sourced from the provincial grant, with the remaining portion covered by Bluewater's wastewater reserve fund, development charge revenues, and the Bayfield Expansion Fund (a revenue source predating development charges).
Ontario's Acting Minister of Infrastructure, Todd McCarthy, noted that through the government's $4 billion CAD Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, the project will help unlock the construction of over 500 new housing units, supporting long-term growth and new job creation in the region. Prior to the completion of the expansion, the Bayfield wastewater treatment facility had been operating beyond its rated capacity, limiting development in the Bayfield settlement area. Expanding this facility will help Bluewater meet the current and future housing needs of the community.
Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson pointed out that investments in critical infrastructure, such as the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant, are essential for supporting strong, sustainable communities and creating the necessary conditions for their future growth. Through the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, the government is helping municipalities enhance wastewater treatment capacity, support housing opportunities, and ensure reliable services for residents and businesses for years to come.
