en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port of Oakland has activated new Liebherr ship-to-shore cranes at the TraPac Oakland terminal, all-electric equipment capable of handling the largest container ships currently in operation. Standing over 440 feet tall, equivalent to approximately 40 stories, these cranes provide greater outreach and lifting capacity for the TraPac Oakland terminal, enabling larger vessels to call and handling higher container volumes through this California gateway port.

For the port, the height and outreach of the cranes have practical significance. As ships become wider and stack higher, terminals need equipment that can safely and efficiently reach across vessels. Without sufficient outreach, paper capacity does not always translate into actual berth capability. The new cranes are designed to bridge this gap, expanding the port's ability to handle larger ships while ensuring smooth cargo flow for Northern California importers, exporters, and the inland supply chain. These all-electric units help reduce direct emissions at the terminal, supporting the port's broader environmental direction, which is significant for communities and users facing stringent sustainability expectations. For shippers, more powerful cranes also improve vessel operation efficiency, alleviate berth pressure, and help the terminal manage peak container flows.

Port Commissioners Stephanie Dominguez Walton and Derrick H. Muhammad attended the formal activation ceremony, including a ribbon-cutting segment, marking the cranes' entry into operation. Port of Oakland Executive Director Kristi McKenney and TraPac Oakland Operations Director Christopher Lambert emphasized that this investment is a step toward enhancing terminal operational capacity. For California exporters and importers, the question is whether the port can handle larger vessels without slowing the cargo chain, and Oakland's current berths have provided an answer through this equipment.
